Dean was born in Nottingham, England, and began playing saxophone at the age of 14. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and then joined the band Soft Machine in 1968. He remained with the band until 1971, when he left to pursue a solo career. Dean has released several solo albums, including Elton Dean's Newsense (1975), Just Us (1977), and Elton Dean's Ninesense (1978). He has also collaborated with a variety of other musicians, including Keith Tippett, Carla Bley, and Robert Wyatt. In addition to his musical career, Dean has also acted in several films, including The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and The Shout (1978). He has also appeared in television shows, including The Young Ones (1984) and The Comic Strip Presents (1985). Dean has been married twice, first to singer and actress Julie Driscoll, and then to singer and actress Barbara Gaskin. He has two children from his first marriage.
