Eric Cassell was born on August 29, 1928 in New York City. He is a physician and professor emeritus at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is best known for his work in palliative care, which he has been involved in since the 1970s. Cassell received his medical degree from the University of Rochester in 1954. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Rochester in 1957. He then completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Minnesota in 1959. Cassell has served as a professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College since 1965. He was the founding director of the Division of Palliative Care at Weill Cornell Medical College from 1975 to 1995. He is also the author of The Nature of Suffering and the Goals of Medicine, which is considered a seminal work in the field of palliative care. Cassell has received numerous awards and honors for his work in palliative care, including the American Medical Association's Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service in 1998 and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
