Erich Peter Wohlfarth was a German physicist and professor at the University of Hamburg. He was born in Berlin, Germany, on 7 December 1924. He studied physics at the University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1950. Wohlfarth was a professor of physics at the University of Hamburg from 1956 to 1991. He was a pioneer in the field of magnetism and developed the Wohlfarth model, which is used to describe the behavior of magnetic materials. He also developed the Wohlfarth-Rosenblatt equation, which is used to calculate the magnetization of a material. Wohlfarth was a member of the German Physical Society and the American Physical Society. He was awarded the Max Planck Medal in 1988 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1991. At the time of his death in 2018, Wohlfarth was 94 years old.
