Erick Hawkins was an American dancer, choreographer, and teacher. He was born on April 23, 1909 in Trinidad, Colorado, USA. He was the son of a coal miner and a homemaker. He began his dance training at the age of nine, studying with the Denishawn School of Dance in Los Angeles. He later studied with Martha Graham and became her assistant in the 1930s. In 1940, Hawkins formed his own dance company, the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, which toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. He choreographed more than 50 works, including the ballets "The Seasons" and "Theatre Piece". He also wrote several books on dance, including "The Body is a Clear Place and Other Statements on Dance" and "The Dance Has Many Faces". In addition to his work as a choreographer, Hawkins was also a teacher. He taught at the Juilliard School, the American Dance Festival, and the University of California, Berkeley. He was also a professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Erick Hawkins died on November 22, 1994 in New York City. He was 85 years old. His net worth at the time of his death is unknown.
