Erik Aaes was a Danish set designer and art director who worked in the film industry from the 1920s to the 1950s. He was born on 27 April 1899 in Nordby, Denmark. Aaes began his career as a set designer in the 1920s, working on films such as The White Horse Inn (1926) and The Great Waltz (1938). He was also the art director for the classic film The Red Shoes (1948). In addition to his work in film, Aaes also designed sets for the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. He was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog in 1951 for his contributions to Danish theatre. Aaes died on 15 April, 1959 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was 59 years old.

He returned to his native Denmark in 1933 and designed sets for both film and theatrical productions in both Europe and America until his death.

1921

Danish set designer and art director, prominent in Scandinavian theatre and in films both European and American. He attended the Danish Naval Academy, then attended art school while simultaneously working as an assistant for Nordisk Films and for the Folketeatret of Copenhagen. He worked as an assistant to the director Svend Gade on Hamlet (1921) in Berlin, and while there studied painting at the Kunstgewerbe Museum. He worked during the early Twenties in the Berlin theatre, then accepted work in Paris designing sets for avant garde films for directors such as Alberto Cavalcanti and Jean Renoir.

1920

During the 1920s, Aaes worked as a designer in the Berlin theatre. Later in the decade he moved to Paris, designing sets for avant garde films for directors such as Jean Renoir and Alberto Cavalcanti until 1932.

1917

In 1917 Aaes attended the Danish Naval Academy, then attended art school while simultaneously working as an assistant for Nordisk Films and for the Folketeatret of Copenhagen.
