Erik Söderlund is a Swedish racewalker who was born on 11 April 1925 in Stockholm, Sweden. He is one of the most successful racewalkers in the history of the sport, having won multiple medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships. He is also the oldest living Olympic champion, having won gold in the 50 km walk at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Söderlund began his career as a racewalker in the 1940s, and quickly rose to prominence in the sport. He won his first major international medal in 1951, when he took bronze in the 50 km walk at the European Championships in Turin, Italy. He went on to win gold in the 50 km walk at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, setting a new Olympic record in the process. He also won silver in the 20 km walk at the same Olympics. In addition to his Olympic success, Söderlund also won multiple medals at the World Championships, including gold in the 50 km walk at the 1958 World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. He also won silver in the 20 km walk at the 1962 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Söderlund retired from competitive racewalking in 1965, but he remains active in the sport as a coach and mentor. He is currently 98 years old.
