He is best known for his career in the light heavyweight division, where he won the European title in 1951. Thastum began his boxing career in 1945 and had his first professional fight in 1947. He went on to have a successful career, winning the European light heavyweight title in 1951 and the Danish light heavyweight title in 1952. He also fought for the world light heavyweight title in 1954, but lost to Archie Moore. Thastum retired from boxing in 1956 and went on to become a successful businessman. He is now 97 years old and is still active in the business world. Thastum has been married twice and has three children. He currently resides in Copenhagen, Denmark.
