Ernest Laszlo was a Hungarian-born cinematographer who worked in Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1960s. He was best known for his work on the classic films The Bad Seed (1956), The Big Country (1958), and Spartacus (1960). Laszlo was born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary in 1898. He began his career in the film industry in the 1920s, working as a camera assistant in Germany. He then moved to the United States in the 1930s, where he worked as a cinematographer on a number of films, including The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), and The Great Dictator (1940). Laszlo was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on The Bad Seed, and he won the award for his work on The Big Country. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Spartacus. Laszlo died in Los Angeles in 1984 at the age of 86.

From 1972 to '74 Ernest Laszlo served as the president of the American Society of Cinematographers.

1961

After 30 years as a director of photography, Laszlo was honored with his first Oscar nomination in 1961 for shooting Inherit the Wind (1960) for Stanley Kramer.

He was subsequently Oscar-nominated for the cinematography on Kramer's Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and Ship of Fools (1965), for which he finally won his Oscar.

Before hooking up with Kramer, his most notable collaboration was with Aldrich, for whom he shot 11 films, including Vera Cruz (1954), the noir classic Kiss Me Deadly (1955) and The Big Knife (1955).
