Ernesto Cardenal is a Nicaraguan poet, priest, and politician. He was born on January 20, 1925 in Granada, Nicaragua. He is best known for his poetry, which has been translated into many languages, and for his political activism. He was a member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and served as Nicaragua's Minister of Culture from 1979 to 1988. Cardenal is considered one of the most important Latin American poets of the 20th century. He has published more than 40 books of poetry, prose, and essays. His work has been translated into more than 20 languages. He has received numerous awards, including the Reina Sofía Prize for Ibero-American Poetry in 2004 and the Cervantes Prize in 2015. Cardenal has also been active in politics. He was a member of the FSLN and served as Nicaragua's Minister of Culture from 1979 to 1988. He has also been a vocal critic of the Nicaraguan government and has been arrested several times for his political activities. Cardenal is currently living in Managua, Nicaragua. He is 95 years old.
