He is best known for his work in the Spaghetti Western genre, writing the screenplays for films such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). Gastaldi began his career as an assistant director in the 1950s, working on films such as The White Warrior (1959) and The Magnificent Gladiator (1964). He then began writing screenplays, often in collaboration with other writers, and went on to write the screenplays for over 100 films. Gastaldi has been nominated for several awards, including the David di Donatello Award for Best Screenplay for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). He has also been honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists in 2006.
