Ernst Gombrich was an Austrian-born British art historian and author. He was the author of the best-selling The Story of Art, one of the most widely read books on art ever written. He was a professor at the Warburg Institute of the University of London from 1959 to 1976. Gombrich was born in Vienna, Austria, on 30 March 1909. He studied at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in art history in 1932. He then worked as a curator at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna until 1938, when he was forced to flee the Nazi regime. He moved to England, where he worked as a lecturer at the Warburg Institute. Gombrich wrote several books on art history, including The Story of Art, which has sold more than 7 million copies and has been translated into more than 30 languages. He also wrote A Little History of the World, which has been translated into more than 40 languages and has sold more than 2 million copies. Gombrich was knighted in 1972 and was made a Companion of Honour in 1983. He died in London on 3 November 2001.
