Hollis was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, and began singing in church at the age of five. She attended the University of Pittsburgh, where she studied music and theater. After college, she moved to Los Angeles and joined The Emotions, with whom she recorded several albums and toured extensively. In 1978, Hollis released her debut solo album, Essie Hollis, which featured the hit single "I'm Here". The album was a success, and she followed it up with two more albums, I'm Here (2015) and I'm Here Again (2017). Hollis has also appeared in several films and television shows, including The Jeffersons, The Cosby Show, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
