Eugen Schüfftan was a German cinematographer and inventor of the Schüfftan process, a special effects technique used in many films. He was born on 21 July 1893 in Breslau, Silesia, Germany (now Wroclaw, Dolnoslaskie, Poland). Schüfftan began his career as a camera assistant in 1912 and worked as a cinematographer for UFA from 1919 to 1933. He was the cinematographer for Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927) and M (1931). He also worked on the films of G. W. Pabst, including The Threepenny Opera (1931). In 1933, Schüfftan emigrated to France, where he worked on several films, including René Clair's Le Million (1931). He also developed the Schüfftan process, a special effects technique that combined a matte painting with a live action shot. The technique was used in many films, including The Wizard of Oz (1939). Schüfftan moved to the United States in 1940 and worked on several films, including The Pride of the Yankees (1942). He returned to Germany in 1950 and worked on several films, including The Bridge (1959). Schüfftan died on 28 April 1985 in Munich, Germany.

When Schüfftan moved to the US, he became a member of Local 644, the East Coast cinematographers chapter of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). He received the Academy Award for black and white cinematography in 1962 for "The Hustler." He did not receive proper screen credit for many films he photographed.

1946

Besides his activity as a cinematographer he remained busy as a special effect artist as well and in this function he was responsible for the productions "The Dark Mirror" (1946), "The Magnetic Monster" (1953), "Ulisse" (1954) and "Marianne de ma jeunesse" (1955).

1940

He moved to the US in 1940 and became a member of Local 644, the East Coast cinematographers chapter of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). He invented the Schüfftan Process for optical special effects that was used until it was replaced by the simpler matte method.
