He studied at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, where he earned a degree in industrial engineering. He then went on to pursue a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University. Garza Lagüera began his career in the 1950s as an engineer at FEMSA, a company founded by his father. He eventually rose to become the company's president and chairman. Under his leadership, FEMSA grew to become one of the largest beverage companies in Latin America. Garza Lagüera is also the chairman of the board of directors of Grupo Financiero Banorte, one of the largest financial groups in Mexico.
