Feliks Dzierzynski was a Polish revolutionary and Soviet statesman. He was the founder and first head of the Soviet secret police, the Cheka, which later became the KGB. He was born in Dzerzhinovo, Oshmyanskiy uezd, Oziemblowo governorate, Russian Empire, on 11 September 1877. Dzierzynski was a member of the Polish Socialist Party and a leader of the 1905 revolution in Poland. He was arrested and exiled to Siberia in 1906. After the February Revolution of 1917, he returned to Russia and joined the Bolsheviks. He was appointed head of the Cheka in December 1917. Dzierzynski was a ruthless leader of the Cheka, and was responsible for the mass executions of political opponents. He was also responsible for the establishment of the Gulag system of labor camps. He was assassinated in July 1926 by a White Russian terrorist. Dzierzynski was a controversial figure in Soviet history. He was praised by some for his role in the establishment of the Soviet state, while others condemned him for his brutality and repression.
