Ferdinand Cheval was a French postman who became famous for building the Palais Idéal, a structure he began constructing in 1879 at the age of 43. He spent 33 years of his life building the palace, which is now a listed historical monument. Cheval was born in Charmes-sur-l'Herbasse, Drôme, France, on 19 April 1836. He was the son of a farmer and had little formal education. He worked as a postman in the nearby village of Hauterives, where he began to collect stones and pebbles he found on his mail route. In 1879, Cheval began to construct the Palais Idéal, a structure made of stones, pebbles, and cement. He worked on the palace for 33 years, and it was completed in 1912. The palace is now a listed historical monument and is open to the public. Cheval died on 19 August 1924 at the age of 88. He was buried in the cemetery of Hauterives, near the Palais Idéal.
