Fernando Birri is an Argentine film director, screenwriter, and actor. He is considered one of the most important figures in the New Latin American Cinema movement. He was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, on March 13, 1925. Birri studied law at the University of Buenos Aires and worked as a journalist before becoming a filmmaker. He was a founding member of the Instituto de Cine Argentino (ICA) in 1956, and in 1959 he founded the Escuela de Cine de Avellaneda, the first film school in Latin America. Birri's first feature film, El Pampero (1958), was a critical success and established him as a major figure in the New Latin American Cinema movement. He went on to direct several other films, including El Desencanto (1976), El Eternauta (1978), and El Sur (1983). Birri has also written several books on film theory and criticism, including El Cine de la Revolución (1966) and El Cine de la Revolución II (1970).
