Florence Wambugu is a Kenyan biologist and agricultural scientist. She is best known for her work in developing and promoting the use of genetically modified crops in Africa. She was born on 23 August 1953 in Kenya. Wambugu earned a BSc in Botany and Zoology from the University of Nairobi in 1976, and a PhD in Plant Pathology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. She then worked as a research scientist at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico from 1983 to 1988. In 1988, Wambugu returned to Kenya and joined the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) as a research scientist. She was appointed the Director of the KARI Biotechnology Program in 1995, and in 1998 she became the first African woman to be appointed as a Director of a National Agricultural Research Institute. Wambugu has been a vocal advocate for the use of genetically modified crops in Africa, and has been involved in numerous research projects and initiatives to promote their use. She has also served on the boards of several international organizations, including the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) and the Global Crop Diversity Trust. In recognition of her work, Wambugu has received numerous awards, including the World Food Prize in 2004, the African Food Prize in 2018, and the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya in 2019.
