Frances Bergen is an American actress and former fashion model. She is best known for her role as the mother of the title character in the television series "Murphy Brown" (1988–1998). She also appeared in films such as "The Group" (1966), "The Sand Pebbles" (1966), and "The Adventurers" (1970). Bergen was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the daughter of Frances Westerman and William Bergen. She began her career as a fashion model in the 1940s, and later appeared in television commercials. She made her film debut in "The Group" (1966), and went on to appear in "The Sand Pebbles" (1966), "The Adventurers" (1970), and "The Wind and the Lion" (1975). In 1988, Bergen was cast as the mother of the title character in the television series "Murphy Brown". She won an Emmy Award for her performance in the role. She also appeared in the films "The Muppet Movie" (1979), "The Muppets Take Manhattan" (1984), and "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz" (2005). Bergen has been married twice, first to actor and director Martin Bergen, and later to actor and director Robert Brown. She has two children, a daughter, Candice Bergen, and a son, Kris Bergen.
