Francis Biddle was an American lawyer and judge who served as Attorney General of the United States from 1940 to 1945. He was born in Paris, France, on May 9, 1886, to Algernon Sydney Biddle and Mary (née Beverley) Biddle. He was educated at Groton School and Harvard University, where he graduated in 1908. Biddle began his legal career in Philadelphia, where he was a partner in the firm of Biddle & Ward. He was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1930, and served as its chief judge from 1937 to 1939. In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Biddle as Attorney General of the United States. He served in this position until 1945, when he resigned to become a judge of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. He was the only American judge to serve on the tribunal. Biddle was a member of the American Bar Association, the American Law Institute, and the American Philosophical Society. He was also a trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Biddle died on October 4, 1968, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was 82 years old.
