He has composed music for over 100 films, including A Man and a Woman, Bilitis, and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. He has also composed music for television series, ballets, and musicals. Lai was born in Nice, France, and began studying music at the age of 14. He studied at the Conservatoire de Nice and the Conservatoire de Paris. He began his career as a jazz pianist and arranger, and later became a conductor and composer.
