Franz Fischler is a former Austrian politician who served as the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries from 1995 to 2004. He was born on 23 September 1946 in Absam, Austria. He studied law at the University of Innsbruck and obtained a doctorate in law in 1971. Fischler was a member of the Austrian People's Party and served as a Member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1995. He was appointed European Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries in 1995 and served in this role until 2004. Fischler is currently the President of the European Forum Alpbach, a think tank based in Austria. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the European Policy Centre and a member of the Advisory Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. Fischler is married and has two children. He is 75 years old.
