He is best known for his roles in the films The Godfather Part II (1974), The Deer Hunter (1978), and The Untouchables (1987). He has also appeared in television shows such as The Rockford Files (1974-1980), Magnum, P.I. (1980-1988), and Law & Order (1990-2010). Beir was born in Niagara Falls, New York, and attended Niagara University. He began his acting career in the early 1960s, appearing in several Broadway productions. He made his film debut in The Godfather Part II in 1974, and went on to appear in numerous films throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Beir has been married twice, first to actress and singer Joanne Worley from 1965 to 1975, and then to actress and singer Linda Lavin from 1982 to 1988. He has two children from his first marriage.
