Fred W. McDarrah was an American photographer and journalist best known for his photographs of the Beat Generation, the civil rights movement, and the New York City art and music scenes of the 1960s. He was born on November 5, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States. McDarrah began his career as a photographer in the 1950s, working for magazines such as Life, Look, and Holiday. He was a staff photographer for the Village Voice from 1958 to 2007, and his work was featured in the paper's weekly column, "Scenes". He also wrote articles for the Voice, and was the paper's first art critic. McDarrah's photographs of the Beat Generation, civil rights movement, and New York City art and music scenes of the 1960s have been widely published and exhibited. He was the author of several books, including Beat Generation: Glory Days in Greenwich Village (1992), The Artist's World in Pictures (1995), and Gay Pride: Photographs from Stonewall to Today (1998). McDarrah died on November 26, 2007, at the age of 81. He was survived by his wife, Gloria, and their two children.
