Hinton was born on August 29, 1956 in Darby, Pennsylvania. He began boxing at the age of 15 and had an amateur record of 30-2. He turned professional in 1978 and won his first professional fight by knockout. Hinton won the WBC super featherweight title in 1983 with a unanimous decision victory over Rafael Limon. He defended the title twice before losing it to Limon in a rematch in 1984. Hinton retired from boxing in 1989 with a professional record of 33-7-1. He currently resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hinton is married and has two children. He is currently involved in the boxing community, working with young boxers and helping to promote the sport.
