He was a Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Economic Society. He was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he obtained a BA in 1936 and a PhD in 1939. He then went on to teach at the University of Manchester, where he was a professor from 1945 to 1980. Geoffrey Bell was a leading figure in the development of macroeconomics and monetary economics. He was a major contributor to the development of the Phillips curve, which is a graphical representation of the relationship between inflation and unemployment. He also wrote extensively on the theory of money and the role of money in the economy. Geoffrey Bell died on 28 April, 2004 at the age of 88. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
