George Antheil was an American avant-garde composer, pianist, and author. He is best known for his experimental compositions, which often featured unusual instruments and techniques. He was also a pioneer in the use of electronic instruments and was one of the first to use the theremin. He wrote music for films, ballets, and theater, and was a prolific writer of books and articles on music and other topics. Antheil was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and studied music at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He moved to Paris in 1923, where he became a part of the avant-garde music scene. He wrote music for the Ballet Mécanique, which was performed in Paris in 1926. He also wrote music for films, including Fritz Lang's Metropolis. Antheil returned to the United States in the 1930s and wrote music for Hollywood films, including The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon. He also wrote music for ballets, including The Prodigal Son and The Seven Deadly Sins. He wrote several books on music, including The New Art of Making Music and The New Music. Antheil died in 1959 in New York City. He was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
