Ballas served in the United States Navy during World War II and then attended Louisiana Tech University. After college, he worked as a salesman for a number of companies before starting his own business in Houston, Texas. In 1971, Ballas invented the Weed Eater, a string trimmer for lawns. The Weed Eater was a revolutionary product that allowed homeowners to trim their lawns without the use of a lawn mower. The Weed Eater was a huge success and made Ballas a millionaire. Ballas went on to invent a number of other products, including the Miracle Broom, the Miracle Mop, and the Miracle Sweeper. He also founded the Weed Eater Corporation, which was later sold to Emerson Electric. Ballas is now retired and lives in Houston, Texas. Ballas got the idea for the trimmer while driving through an automatic car wash, where the rotating brushes gave him an idea. Using a tin can laced with fishing line and an edge trimmer, he tried out his idea, which worked. After some refinements, he shopped it around to several tool makers, who all rejected his invention. He went on to develop the garden tool himself. The first year, sales were over a half million dollars. By 1977 they were $80 million, and Ballas sold his company the following year to Emerson Electric Company.
