George Bassman was an American composer, arranger, and conductor. He was born in New York City and studied at the Juilliard School of Music. He began his career as a jazz pianist and arranger, working with Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and others. He later moved into film and television music, composing the scores for such films as The Big Sleep, The Man with the Golden Arm, and The Apartment. He also wrote the theme music for the television series The Untouchables. Bassman won an Emmy Award for his work on the television series The Defenders. He died in Los Angeles in 1997.
