George Gilbert Wangensteen was an American surgeon and medical educator. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on 28 December 1926. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned his medical degree in 1950. Wangensteen was a pioneer in the field of surgery, and is credited with developing the first successful open-heart surgery. He was also a leader in the development of the modern intensive care unit. He was a professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota and served as the chairman of the department from 1965 to 1975. Wangensteen was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, and the International College of Surgeons. He was also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine. Wangensteen was married to his wife, Mary, for over 50 years. He had two children, a son and a daughter. At the time of his death in 1981, Wangensteen was estimated to have a net worth of $10 million.
