George Moscone was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 38th mayor of San Francisco from January 1976 until his assassination in November 1978. He was born in San Francisco to Italian-American parents and attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory before graduating from the University of Santa Clara and the University of San Francisco School of Law. Moscone began his political career in the California State Assembly in the 1960s, where he served for six years. He was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1970 and was re-elected in 1974. In 1975, he was elected mayor of San Francisco, becoming the first Italian-American to hold the office. During his tenure as mayor, Moscone was a strong advocate for civil rights and social justice. He was instrumental in the passage of the city's first gay rights ordinance, and he appointed the first African-American and first female police chief in San Francisco. He also worked to improve the city's public transportation system and to create more affordable housing. Moscone was assassinated in November 1978 by former supervisor Dan White, who had resigned from the Board of Supervisors earlier that year. His death sparked a period of mourning and protest in San Francisco, and his legacy continues to be remembered today.
