George N. Hatsopoulos is a Greek-American engineer and entrepreneur. He was born on 7 January, 1927 in Athens, Greece. He is the founder and chairman of Thermo Electron Corporation, a global leader in the design and manufacture of instrumentation and systems for industrial and environmental applications. Hatsopoulos received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1950 and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1952. He then went on to receive his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in 1954. Hatsopoulos has been awarded numerous honors and awards, including the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2000, the National Medal of Science in 2002, and the IEEE Founders Medal in 2003. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Hatsopoulos is 91 years old and has a net worth of $1.2 billion. While at MIT, Hatsopoulos was head of the engineering division of Matrad Corporation of New York. Matrad Corporation and MIT also provided financial support for his doctoral thesis The Thermo-Electron Engine. Matrad Corporation was owned by the family of Peter M. Nomikos, a Harvard Business School graduate. In 1956, Nomikos and Hatsopoulos co-founded the Thermo Electron Corporation. Several years later, George asked his brother (John Hatsopoulos) to join the company as financial controller. Under George Hatsopoulos, Thermo Electron became a major provider of analytical instruments and services for a variety of domains. John Hatsopoulos, and Arvin Smith.
