Georgie Auld was a Canadian-born American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and bandleader. He was born John Altwerger in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on May 19, 1919. He began playing saxophone at the age of 12, and by the age of 15 he was playing professionally in local bands. In 1938, Auld moved to New York City and began playing with the bands of Bunny Berigan, Tommy Dorsey, and Artie Shaw. He also recorded with Benny Goodman, and in 1941 he joined the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the 1940s, Auld was a featured soloist with the bands of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Woody Herman. In the 1950s, Auld formed his own big band and recorded several albums for the Verve label. He also worked as a studio musician, playing on recordings by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and others. Auld continued to perform and record until his death in 1990. He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1993.
