Gerald R. Shields is an American educator and former president of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was born on November 24, 1927, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1949 and a master's degree in 1950. He then went on to earn a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Virginia in 1956. Shields began his career as a teacher and principal in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. He then served as the superintendent of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system from 1967 to 1972. In 1972, he was appointed as the first president of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He served in this role until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure as president, Shields was instrumental in the growth and development of the university. He oversaw the construction of numerous buildings, including the Student Union, the Student Activity Center, and the Belk College of Business. He also established the university's first doctoral programs and increased the number of faculty and staff. Shields has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to education.
