Gerhard Giebisch is a German-American physician and scientist who was born in 1927. He is best known for his research in the field of renal physiology and for his contributions to the understanding of electrolyte and acid-base balance. Giebisch received his medical degree from the University of Munich in 1952 and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Freiburg in 1956. He then moved to the United States, where he completed a fellowship in renal physiology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. Giebisch has held numerous academic positions, including professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, professor of physiology at the University of California, San Francisco, and professor of physiology and biophysics at the University of Miami. He has also served as the director of the Division of Nephrology at the University of Miami and as the director of the Division of Nephrology at the University of California, San Francisco. Giebisch has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Kidney Foundation's Distinguished Scientist Award, the American Society of Nephrology's Distinguished Scientist Award, and the American Physiological Society's Distinguished Scientist Award.
