Gertrude Astor was an American character actress who appeared in over 200 films between 1915 and 1947. She was born on November 9, 1887 in Lakewood, Ohio. She began her career in vaudeville and made her film debut in 1915. She was best known for her roles in silent films such as The Mark of Zorro (1920), The Three Musketeers (1921), and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923). Astor was married to actor Jack Mulhall from 1923 until his death in 1979. She was a member of the Motion Picture Relief Fund and the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital. She died on December 25, 1975 in Woodland Hills, California. Gertrude Astor had an estimated net worth of $2 million at the time of her death. She earned her wealth from her acting career. According to Joe Collura in his in-depth Gertrude Astor article found on the pages of Classic Images (April, 2014), the actress ran away from home at the age of 12 and joined a musical troupe in the next town where she learned how to play the trombone and saxophone.

1977

Never married. When she died at age 90 in 1977, the only survivor was a godson, Rod Normond.

1975

A special tribute was paid to 87-year-old Gertrude Astor on September 30, 1975 at Universal Studios. Among those in attendance who spoke included George Cukor, Allan Dwan and Henry Hathaway.

1960

Acting until the 1960s and often in bit parts (she once played a corpse in The Scarlet Claw (1944), her last movie bit was for John Ford in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). Astor often relayed her film memories to friends, fans and historians. At one point in her career she and actress Lilyan Tashman, were known as the most elegant and best dressed women in Hollywood.

She was an Elks Club member and received an award in July of 1936 at their 72nd National Convention in Los Angeles.

The popular female stars she bolstered included Pickford, Norma Talmadge, Gloria Swanson, Patsy Ruth Miller, Colleen Moore, Shirley Mason, Olive Borden and Laura La PlanteWith the advent of sound, Astor's career continued, landing her in a number of two-reel comedies, mostly with the Hal Roach studio and occasionally with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, the "Our Gang" gang and Charley Chase. "I've never been so embarrassed in all my life!" seemed to be one of her most used lines in films.
