Megelea is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won a silver medal in the javelin throw at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He also won a gold medal at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. Megelea is considered one of the greatest javelin throwers of all time, having set the world record in the javelin throw in 1983 with a throw of 91.72 meters. He held the world record for nearly 10 years until it was broken by Steve Backley in 1992. Megelea is married and has two children. He currently lives in Romania.
