Gil Askey is an American musician, composer, arranger, and producer. He is best known for his work with Motown Records, where he served as musical director for the label from 1964 to 1972. He has also worked with a variety of other artists, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and The Temptations. Askey was born in Austin, Texas, and began playing music at an early age. He studied music at the University of Texas and then moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s. He began working as a session musician and arranger, and eventually became a staff arranger for Capitol Records. In 1964, Askey was hired by Motown Records as musical director. He worked with a variety of artists, including The Supremes, The Temptations, and Marvin Gaye. He also wrote and arranged many of the label's biggest hits, including "My Girl" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Askey left Motown in 1972 and continued to work as a session musician and arranger. He has worked with a variety of artists, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and The Temptations.
