Giles Havergal is an actor and director who has been active in the theatre since the 1960s. He is best known for his work with the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, where he was artistic director from 1972 to 1985. He has also directed plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, and the Royal National Theatre. Havergal was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He began his career as an actor in the early 1960s, appearing in productions at the Royal Lyceum Theatre and the Traverse Theatre. He then moved into directing, and in 1972 he was appointed artistic director of the Royal Lyceum Theatre. During his tenure, he directed a number of successful productions, including the world premiere of John Byrne's The Slab Boys Trilogy. Havergal has also directed plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, and the Royal National Theatre. He has also directed operas for the English National Opera and the Royal Opera House. He has been awarded the CBE for his services to theatre.
