Gordon Banks was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Leicester City, Stoke City, and the England national team. He made 628 appearances during a 20-year professional career, and won 73 caps for his country. He is best remembered for his part in England's 1966 World Cup victory, as well as a spectacular save he made in the 1970 World Cup against Brazil's Pele. Banks was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, on 30 December 1937. He began his career at Chesterfield in March 1953, and made his debut for Leicester City in April 1959. He was an ever-present in the Leicester side which won the League Cup in 1964, and was voted FWA Footballer of the Year in 1972. Banks moved to Stoke City in April 1967, and helped the club to the League Cup final in 1972. He was capped 73 times by England, and was part of the team which won the 1966 World Cup. He also made a spectacular save from a header by Brazil's Pele in the 1970 World Cup, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest saves of all time. Banks retired from football in 1978, and was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002. He died on 12 February 2019, aged 81.
