Grose began his career in the banking industry, working for the Bank of New York and then the Chase Manhattan Bank. He eventually became the president of the Bank of New York in 1971. He was also a director of the New York Stock Exchange and a trustee of the New York Public Library. Grose was a philanthropist, donating to numerous charities and organizations. He was a major donor to the University of Pennsylvania, donating millions of dollars to the school. He was also a major donor to the New York Public Library, donating millions of dollars to the library's endowment. Grose was married to his wife, Mary, for over 60 years. He had two children, a son and a daughter. Grose passed away on April 8, 2021 at the age of 98.
