Guiomar Novaes was a Brazilian pianist and composer. She was born in São João da Boa Vista, São Paulo, Brazil, on 28 February 1894. She began her musical studies at the age of five, and at the age of seven she was already performing in public. She studied with Alfredo Piatti in Milan, and with Ferruccio Busoni in Berlin. Novaes was a virtuoso pianist, and her repertoire included works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, Mozart, Ravel, Schumann, and others. She was also a composer, and her works include a piano concerto, a symphony, and several chamber works. Novaes was a professor at the National Conservatory of Music in Rio de Janeiro, and she was also a professor at the Juilliard School in New York. She was awarded the Order of Merit of the Brazilian government in 1965. Novaes died on 7 March 1979 in Rio de Janeiro. She was 85 years old.
