H. Norman Abramson is an American engineer and professor emeritus at the University of Hawaii. He is best known for his pioneering work in the development of wireless communication systems, including the ALOHAnet, which was the first wireless data network. He is also credited with the invention of the spread spectrum technique, which is used in modern wireless communication systems. Abramson was born in San Antonio, Texas, and received his B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1948. He then went on to receive his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1950 and 1954, respectively. Abramson began his career as a professor at the University of Hawaii in 1954, where he remained until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure at the university, he served as the director of the university's Institute for Telecommunication Sciences and was the founding director of the university's Computer Science Department. In addition to his academic work, Abramson was also a consultant for numerous companies, including AT&T, Bell Laboratories, and the U.S. Air Force. He was also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Abramson has been awarded numerous honors and awards for his work, including the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal, the IEEE Centennial Medal, and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. He was also inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006.
