H. V. F. Winstone is a British historian and author. He was born in London, England, on 3 August 1926. He is best known for his works on the history of the British Empire and the Middle East. He has written several books, including The Illicit Adventure: The Story of Political and Military Intelligence in the Middle East from 1898 to 1926 (1982), The Middle East in the Twentieth Century (1985), and The British in the Middle East (1989). Winstone was educated at the University of Oxford, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern History in 1949. He then went on to pursue a career in the British Civil Service, working in the Middle East from 1950 to 1965. He then returned to the United Kingdom and worked as a lecturer in Middle Eastern History at the University of Manchester from 1965 to 1972. Winstone has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Royal Historical Society's Alexander Prize in 1982 and the British Academy's Sir Frank Kermode Prize in 1989. Winstone’s first biography was published in 1976 to positive reviews: Captain Shakespear: A Portrait, a study of the explorer William Shakespear. A series of critically well-regarded books followed, mainly biographies of British figures associated with the nineteenth and twentieth century history of the Middle East, such as Gertrude Bell, Gerard Leachman, Leonard Woolley, Howard Carter and Lady Anne Blunt.

From 1975 to 1990, he was freelance special features writer for The Guardian, book reviewer for The Daily Telegraph, and was a contributor to Connoisseur, The Times, and various specialist journals.

1947

Victor Winstone worked as a reporter and features writer with weekly journals and a financial features agency from 1947 to 1950. He was an industrial journal editor and press advisor to Royal Doulton and others during the 1950s and 60s. From 1970 to 1982, he was a freelance writer and magazine editor, chiefly of journals about decorative and applied arts (Pottery Gazette, Tableware International, Home and Table, Ambassador). He also wrote for industrial and commercial publications and was the supervisory editor of the English edition of Automobile World (Zurich).
