Hans Schneider (mathematician) is a 96-year-old Austrian mathematician who is best known for his work in linear algebra and matrix theory. He is a professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Born on 24 January 1927 in Austria, Schneider earned his PhD in mathematics from the University of Vienna in 1951. He then went on to teach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was a professor from 1965 to 1997. Schneider is best known for his work in linear algebra and matrix theory. He is the author of several books, including Linear Algebra (1971), Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory (1974), and Linear Algebra and Its Applications (1977). He has also written numerous papers on linear algebra and matrix theory. Schneider has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Academy of Sciences Award in Mathematics (1985), the John von Neumann Award (1986), and the American Mathematical Society's Leroy P. Steele Prize (1987). Schneider is married and has two children. He currently resides in Madison, Wisconsin.
