He is known for his work in the philosophy of science, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of history. Skjervheim studied philosophy at the University of Oslo, where he received his doctorate in 1956. He was a professor at the University of Bergen from 1965 to 1991. He has written several books, including The Structure of Historical Knowledge (1972), The Nature of Historical Knowledge (1977), and The Nature of Historical Explanation (1984).
