Harry J. Anslinger was an American government official who served as the first Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics from 1930 to 1962. He was a major proponent of the criminalization of marijuana and other drugs, and was a key figure in the development of the War on Drugs. Anslinger was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1892. He attended Pennsylvania State University, where he studied law and economics. After graduating in 1915, he worked as a lawyer in Altoona before joining the Bureau of Prohibition in 1927. In 1930, Anslinger was appointed as the first Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, a position he held until 1962. During his tenure, he was a major proponent of the criminalization of marijuana and other drugs, and was a key figure in the development of the War on Drugs. Anslinger was also a vocal opponent of the legalization of marijuana, and was a major proponent of the criminalization of drug use. He was also a major proponent of the use of mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses. Anslinger died on November 14, 1975, at the age of 83. He was buried in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
