Hartford N. Gunn Jr. is a former president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was born in 1927 in Port Washington, New York, U.S. He attended the Hotchkiss School and then went on to Yale University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1949. He then went on to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1951. Gunn began his career at MIT in 1951 as an instructor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He was promoted to professor in 1962 and served as the head of the department from 1966 to 1971. In 1971, he was appointed the dean of the School of Engineering, a position he held until 1980. In 1980, he was appointed the president of MIT, a position he held until 1990. Gunn is credited with leading MIT through a period of significant growth and expansion. During his tenure, the university's endowment grew from $400 million to $1.2 billion, and the number of faculty members increased from 1,000 to 1,400. He also oversaw the construction of several new buildings, including the Stata Center and the Simmons Hall dormitory. Gunn has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to education. In 1990, he was awarded the National Medal of Science, and in 1991, he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. He has also received honorary degrees from several universities, including Yale, Harvard, and MIT. Gunn is currently a professor emeritus at MIT and a senior advisor to the president of the university. He is also a member of the board of directors of several companies, including the Boston Scientific Corporation and the Raytheon Company.

Hartford N. Gunn Jr. (1927- January 2, 1986) was the founding President of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

On January 2, 1986, Gunn died of cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital at the age of 59. He was survived by his mother Edith Arnold Gunn of Glen Cove and his cousin Dr. Albert E. Gunn of Houston.

1976

Gunn became vice-chairman of PBS in 1976. He was general manager of KCET, (at the time it was the public TV station in Los Angeles) from 1979 until 1983. Before his death he worked as a public television consultant in Annapolis, Maryland where he had lived.

1970

In 1970 he was chosen as the first president of the Public Broadcasting Service, at least in part due to his “widely acknowledged success in the 1960s at the Boston television station WGBH.” At the time he started (after receiving an MBA at the Harvard Business School in 1951), WGBH was an FM radio station. He helped it add the television station there and became the general manager. (Note: The LA Times reported he started in 1952, a year after he graduated)

1969

In 1969 as manager of WGBH-TV, Gunn invited Fred Rogers to accompany him and testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications in support of the full funding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
