Won the 1924 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the play "Hell-Bent Fer Heaven".

1921

Playwright and occasional theatrical director. Hughes had 5 productions appear on Broadway from 1921-1934. While none of these (see "Other Works") were huge hits, his most successful melodrama was purchased by Warner Brothers, then a lower rung studio, and produced as Hell-Bent for Heaven (1926).

In the early 1920s he spent his vacations in the Carolina mountains, interacting with the locals and studying their lives and culture.
