Heinrich Schliemann was a German businessman and amateur archaeologist who made a fortune in the California gold rush and used it to fund his excavations of ancient sites in Greece and Turkey. He is best known for his discovery of the site of Troy in 1871. Schliemann was born in Neubukow, Germany, on 6 January 1822. He was the son of Ernst Schliemann, a Protestant pastor, and Luise Therese Sophie Schliemann. He was educated at home until the age of nine, when he was sent to boarding school in Neustrelitz. At the age of 14, Schliemann left school and began working as a clerk in a trading house in St. Petersburg, Russia. He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became a partner in the firm. In 1846, he moved to California to take advantage of the gold rush and made a fortune in the process. In 1868, Schliemann returned to Europe and began to pursue his lifelong dream of finding the site of Troy. He excavated the site of Hisarlik in Turkey and declared it to be the site of the legendary city. His discoveries revolutionized the field of archaeology and made him famous. Schliemann died in Naples, Italy, on 26 December 1890. He was 68 years old.
